With 2022 NAIDOC Week just around the corner we reflect on what it means to us and our role. We also check out some of the local events that celebrate First Nations culture and the great work on the journey to reconciliation.
Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!
NAIDOC week is a time to celebrate those who have driven and led change in First Nations communities over generations. They are the heroes and champions of change, equal rights and the basic human dignity and respect of First Nations people.
What it means to us.
With National Reconciliation Week just last month, First Nations issues are still very much at the top of our minds. As an organisation, we will be working hard to continue to keep it there. We have also been thinking very hard about our role in the journey to reconciliation.
For us, while acknowledgements and good intentions have been a step towards reconciliation, it's important to move beyond those things.
We must use our thoughts and actions daily to effect change, it must be a genuine commitment to institutional, structural, collaborative, and cooperative reforms in our organisation, our industries and society in general.
We recognise that the relationship between First Nation people and non‑Indigenous Australians needs to be based on justice, equity, and the proper recognition of rights.
As an organisation, we need to work with First Nations people to listen and amplify their voices. We need to narrow the gap between aspiration and reality, good intent and outcome.
For us, that means not only our commitments as a part of reconciliation week but lending our small but significant to us communication channels to highlight First Nation people's issues but also to celebrate their achievements.
History.
NAIDOC has a complex and diverse history that extends over 100 years. It's not for us to tell the story, respectfully it's best that they share it in their own words. Please take the time to read the link below and join us on this journey of reconciliation. It is a history worthy of a read.
Education.
It is an important part of the journey of reconciliation to own our history and build reconciliation into our education.
